Adirondack Chairs
With a single design from Westport, New York an entire patio furniture
segment was born. The original Adirondack chair's name refers to the Adirondack
Mountains, which Westport the original design originated is near. The
traditional chair is constructed from
wood and features a straight back and seat. Wide armrests suitable for
setting food and beverages are the signature of the chair. Slight variations of
the original design from rustic to modern have followed. There is even a double Adirondack chair that will comfortably accommodate up to two adults. But rest assured, the comfort of the original Adirondack chair design remains the same.

Believe it or not the Adirondack chair was originally called the Westport chair...
Yes, PatioLivingPlus.com is your online destination for outdoor patio and porch furniture, but we are also very
interested in the history of our products. Maybe we pride ourselves on having the most
knowledgeable staff in the industry and you can't totally understand a product if you don't know it's origins. So, if you are shopping for an Adirondack chair today it was once called the Westport chair. And the next question is always why? Well quite simply because the original inventor, Thomas Lee created the design in a small town nestled in the Adirondack mountains called Westport. He set out to
create a chair that would be suitable for both indoor and outdoor use alike and man did he hit a homerun. After sharing his
prototype with friends and family, the feedback he received was overwhelming it is comfortable! So as the chair gained popularity the name evolved to more represent the region of it's origin than the specific city. And honestly it no longer matters as you can find this outdoor chair at beachfront homes, poolside, or manicured lawns across America.
So why is the
classic Adirondack chair so popular still? Plain and simple - it is comfortable. At first glance you first notice the wide paddle armrests which are designed that way to give your arms and elbows plenty of surface area to rest. No to mention a little extra area for a good novel or maybe a favorite drink. The armrests are placed at a natural height so you don't feel like they are resting at all. Then the engineering aspect that defines this chair is the angled backrest. It gives off a curved affect the feels like it
literally wraps around your back and the rest is history. These are the basics and yes there have been slight variations made over the year, but the fundamentals remain the same. You will be hard pressed to find a chair that even comes close and the affordable price point makes it a hands down winner. The most popular material choice remains wood and with a little care and maintenance it is very possible that one day you will pass this chair onto your children so they may also relax in Adirondack comfort.
