We are happy we spent the little extra and got a quality made product. We were finding a bunch of gliders in the low to mid $200 price range, but once we starting asking questions we discovered the difference in craftsmanship (ie. nail vs. screw construction, imported vs handmade in the US). This glider has exceeded our expectations. We selected the stained oak wood and the finish is very well applied and nice natural tone.

Pressure Treated Pine
Yes, you can stain or paint Wolmanized Natural Select™ wood. Also, you can coat Natural Select™ wood with a water repellent; in fact, we highly recommend it. The best way to tackle these jobs depends on the wood's exposure, and the coating you plan to use.
Oak
Oak ranks high in its machining, sanding and finishing properties and is widely used in furniture, flooring, moldings, staves, paneling, and timbers.
We can add an Ultra Premium Penofin stain in a cedar tone color to your oak piece as an option. It does cost a little more but saves a lot of time and effort. Other methods to protect your furniture are listed below.
Finishing Options
Paint: The procedure for painting treated wood is no different from that for painting untreated wood. For best results use a primer before painting. Follow the paint manufacturer's instructions.
Stain: For the traditional two-step finish you first stain the wood and then add a clear protective finish. This system is used to obtain rich, professional looking finishes. Stains may be oil-based or water-based. Best advice: follow the stain manufacturer's instructions.
The all in one products like Minwax® Polyshades, are convenient because they simplify the finishing process and cut finishing time in half. They're ideal for use on smaller pieces, like decorative items that don't experience high wear and tear. However, keep in mind that you don't get the same depth of color and durable protection that you do when using separate stain and finish products so I don't recommend them.
Polyurethane: A semi-gloss polyurethane with UV light protection will give the wood a natural look. The polyurethane will place a very hard finish over the wood that easily resists water, chemicals and grease. It won't crack, peel or stain; and covers the grain well. A UV stabilizer is incorporated to protect it from breaking down in sunlight and to protect any underlying stains from fading. It can be applied over stain or to unstained wood for added protection. A light sanding between coats will give you the best finish.
Spar Varnish: A high quality tung oil spar varnish will protect your furniture from water and ultraviolet light. Apply a uniform, thin coat using a high quality, clean polyester or natural bristle brush. Brush in even strokes in the direction of the wood grain. Avoid lap marks by maintaining a wet edge at all times. Use care on vertical surfaces to avoid runs. Apply at least two thin coats to all surfaces and especially the edges. For maximum protection apply up to four coats. Between coats sand lightly. Remove all sanding dust before applying each additional coat. Avoid application in direct sunlight or when rain is threatening or late in the day when dew may affect the drying time. McCloskey Man O' War is a brand I have had good luck with. |
