So how old is the porch swing?

So where did one of America's most loved outdoor furniture pieces come from anyway? Well to understand it's history you have to first start in the early 18th century when colonists began blending architectural styles with the nation's developing diversity - resulting in the front porch as it has come to be known today. But it was not until the Victorian era, where front porches were a common feature to newly constructed houses and industrial advancements led to an entire new industry that we now refer to outdoor furniture that the porch swing was first introduced. So an exact date of the first porch swing is not recorded or nor is it that important. It's the evolution and journey that is so intriguing that after hundreds of years remains an American staple. It has become so popular it is almost hard to find a neighbor or a friend who doesn't have one. And it is not uncommon to know someone who owns more than one. Many believe it's continued popularity is directly correlated to the increasing pressures and stresses of the modern day. Everyone needs an innocent, carefree getaway. And the outdoor porch swing is definitely that.

So what has changed from the first porch swing to today's limitless variety. Very simple - alot. Outdoor furniture swings are now offered in hundreds of colors and materials that weren't available hundreds of years ago. Don't think the original colonists ever would have thought of the recycled plastic swing, metal porch swings or the wicker porch swing. Or how about the resin swing that is designed to look like authentic wicker, but is virtually indestructible. But hey - they gave us enough with the wood swing to last a few hundred years. And for those that don't have a front porch to hang your new swing - no worries.
